In COMFORT/CONSUME (ME), plastic serves as an extended metaphor for femininity: at once alluring and toxic, convenient and harmful. Across collage, sculpture and installation, colorful plastic garbage, lovingly collected across many years and through different cities, is melted into large, obscene puddles of beautiful waste. The project explores how a process of toxic consumption occurs both through our relationship with plastic, as well as through internalized values around gender, specifically through a performance of femininity synonymous with consumption. The experience I want the viewer to have is to be drawn in by the joyful collection of bright colors, commercial cartoons, sweet motifs of fruits and flowers, and, upon closer looking, experience an unsettling discomfort toward the insidious toxicity of heated plastic, and an unease toward the deformed, distorted imagery.
